“What should we wear to our photoshoot?”

Learning how to dress yourself for your photoshoot can actually make a big difference in how your images turn out. You’re paying your photographer to make you look good, however, it’s a team effort, baby, and what you wear is definitely plays a big part.

So what looks good on camera and what should you avoid when planning for your Orlando family photoshoot?

Soft Neutrals & Earth Tones

If you want to stand out during an outdoor photoshoot in Florida, neutral tones and earth tones are the clear winner (If you aren’t convinced, then just look at the images below).

Neutral tones and earth tones compliment both you and your surroundings perfectly, creating a clean, timeless, and elegant look to your images.

If you want to wow yourself and whoever is peaking at your family photos, neutrals and earth tones are the clear answer.

Bonus points for moms who wear a flowy dress and dad’s who don’t show up wearing blue.

Warm Pastels

But aren’t pastels aren't just for spring? No, they aren’t. They look good at any time of year and are a perfect solution to anyone who wants a pop of color in their family photos without being too much! The key is choosing muted versions of these colors rather than bright or neon shades.

Listen, if you insist on coming to your photoshoot wearing denim, we are doing it the right way. Denim walks to line between cool/stylish and too casual for photos. Together, we can make it work. We just dress the denim up a little.

Instead of everyone wearing jeans and matching shirts, mix denim with softer tones and textures.

For example:

• Dad in dark denim and a neutral shirt

• Mom in a flowy cream dress

• Kids in coordinating neutral outfits

What To Avoid

Before I get into this part - I know not everyone can rush out and buy a new outfit just for a photoshoot. I’m not telling you to do that, however I would pay attention to this next part because it will be the difference between family photos you love and family photos you don’t like so much. You’re paying your photographer a lot of money to create timeless images you can love forever. When I say avoid these next outfit ideas, please listen!

Blue (Especially blue and khaki)

I know dad wants to pull out the old khaki pants and the blue polo but for his own good — please tell him to put it away. I know you typically feel like a queen in that blue dress, but please leave it at home this time.

"But what’s wrong with blue, Laura?” I know, it’s an obvious choice for many. It’s clean, it’s simple, and it usually looks cute, I get it. BUT IT DOESN’T WORK FOR PHOTOGRAPHS! Especially family photos.

Here’s why it doesn’t work:

• 💙 It competes with the sky and can blend into the background.

• 🌿 It can clash with greenery, especially bright or cool blues.

• ☀️ Bright blues can steal attention from faces.

• ✨ Strong blue can reflect onto skin, creating an unwanted cool or blue cast.

• 🌅 It can fight against warm golden-hour light instead of complementing it.

• 👖 Blue jeans + blue shirts + blue sky = a LOT of blue.

• 🌊 Near water, blue clothing can blend right into the surroundings.

If there’s one piece of advice I would love you to listen to, it’s to ditch the blue!

Other things to avoid:

• Neon or very bright colors

• Large logos

• Character clothing

• Matching white shirts on everyone

• Busy patterns

• Athletic wear

The Goal Isn't Matching

The best family outfits don't match—they coordinate.

Choose two or three colors that work well together, mix in some texture, and let everyone's personality show through. When outfits complement each other rather than compete, the photos feel natural, relaxed, and timeless.

Cypress Grove Park is one of the most popular locations for family photography near Dr Phillips, and it's easy to see why. The park has large oak trees, walking paths, open fields, and a beautiful white mansion overlooking the lake. It gives plenty of variety without needing to walk very far.

The light here is especially beautiful during golden hour, about an hour before sunset, when everything softens and the trees create a warm backdrop.

Best time for photos: One hour before sunset.

What to wear: Soft neutral colors, earth tones, creams, greens, or muted pinks all work well. Try to avoid bright neon colours or large logos, as they can pull attention away from everyone's faces.

2. Dr. P. Phillips Community Park

If you have younger children who like to move around, this park offers lots of open space without feeling overcrowded. The walking paths, lake views, and mature trees make it a relaxed setting for natural family photos.

Because it's close to home for many Dr Phillips families, it's also a convenient option for evening sessions after work or school.

Best time for photos: Late afternoon into sunset.

It’s been the go to for years, especially for beach sessions and outdoor family photography. And while it’s safe… I’m going to be honest with you as a Kissimmee and Orlando family photographer. It’s also kind of boring.

I say that with love, because I know it feels like an easy win. But after photographing so many family photoshoots in Celebration, Disney area resorts, and all across Central Florida, I can tell you this combo rarely does you any favors on camera.

First, let’s talk about how it actually photographs. Khaki has a tendency to fall flat, especially in bright Florida light. It can look dull and washed out, and it doesn’t bring much richness or depth into your images. Pair that with standard blues like navy or light blue, and suddenly your photos start to feel a little… expected. Not timeless in a fresh way. More like a catalog from ten years ago.

And here’s the bigger thing. Blue and khaki just doesn’t say anything about you. My First Paid Gig Was A Wedding (And It Was the Best Risk I Ever Took)

Now listen, I love my home state. The palm trees, the beaches, the endless sunshine. But let’s be honest… Florida in the summer is like stepping into a sauna with a blow dryer in your face. Add in some humidity that could steam broccoli and mosquitoes the size of small birds, and well, it makes for some challenges when it comes to outdoor photoshoots.

But don’t worry, with the right prep and a little know-how (that I’ve picked up over years of shooting here), you can have an amazing, beautiful, and yes, comfortable photo session, even in the dead of July. So grab a cold drink and let’s get into it!

Why Timing is EVERYTHING!

If you take nothing else from this blog post, please remember this: the time of day you schedule your session matters so much more than you realize.

I’ve had people request sessions at 1:00 PM in August and let me tell you, it’s not pretty. The sun is high, the shadows are harsh, everyone’s makeup is melting, and nobody wants to cuddle for those cute family shots when you’re sticking to each other like Velcro.

The best times to book your summer outdoor photoshoot in Florida are:

• Golden Hour (about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset) The light is soft, golden, and flatters every skin tone. Plus, it’s significantly cooler.

• Early morning (before 9 AM) The air is fresher, the bugs are quieter, and you might even catch a little morning mist.

Avoid mid-day sessions (11 AM – 3 PM) like the plague — unless you’re aiming for the “I just ran a marathon” look.

Personal tip: Some of my most magical sessions have happened right at sunrise. I know it sounds early, but there’s something kind of peaceful about having the beach or a park to yourself in that soft, dewy morning light.

How to Keep Cool Without Losing Your Cool

Yes, it’s hot, but there are ways to beat the heat and still look fabulous:

Clothing Tips:

• Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics. Think cotton, linen, or gauze. Avoid heavy materials and dark colors (unless you’re going for moody vibes, and even then, consider how much heat you’re trapping).

• Loose, flowy outfits not only feel better but photograph beautifully. I adore dresses with movement, linen button-ups, and soft fabrics that catch the breeze.

• Bring backup outfits if you’re prone to sweating. A quick change can be a lifesaver.

• Stick to light, neutral, or soft pastel colors. They reflect sunlight better and keep you cooler.

Beauty Prep:

• Opt for waterproof and sweat-resistant makeup. Trust me, you’ll thank me.

• Blotting papers and a handheld fan (or one of those misting fans) are your best friends.

• Hydrate like crazy. Bring a bottle of cold water for each person, and yes, it’s okay to take breaks. I want you to be safe and comfortable.

Some spots are better suited for summer sessions than others. Shady parks, tree-lined streets, or locations with covered areas (gazebos, porches, or canopied trails) can be lifesavers.

• I always scout for shaded spots or use natural reflectors (like light-colored walls or sandy paths) to bounce beautiful, even light onto your face.

• I schedule sessions during those golden, dreamy hours.

• I position you with the sun behind or to the side of you to avoid squinting and harsh shadows.

Bonus Pro Tips for a Successful Summer Photoshoot

• Bug Spray is your buddy. Florida mosquitoes don’t mess around.

• Bring a towel or wipes for quick dabs and touch-ups.

• Pack a cooler in your car with ice water and snacks.

• Embrace the casual vibe. Summer sessions are perfect for barefoot beach walks, candid family picnics, and chasing little ones through a park sprinkler.

• Don't stress about perfect hair. A little wind or beachy wave looks natural and relaxed in photos. Florida humidity has its own plans , we might as well roll with it.

Anyone who's spent a summer in Central Florida knows that afternoon thunderstorms are practically a daily occurrence. And they always seem to show up just when you're about to start your outdoor session. I took a Family out a few weeks ago to Cypress Grove Park in Orlando. A gorgeous park where the lighting is always stunning, however this time it wasn’t so stunning. All day the weather was fine and then as soon as we arrived at the park, the skies opened up.

By choosing an early morning shoot, you're avoiding that gamble entirely. The sky is clearer, the parks and public spaces are quieter, and we’re not rushing to beat the storm clouds. It’s a calmer, smoother experience for everyone.

Quieter Locations, Better Experience

Popular spots in Orlando and Kissimmee can get crowded quickly, especially near attractions, scenic parks, or vacation resorts. When we shoot early, we often get these beautiful locations all to ourselves. No tourists wandering into the background, no photo-bombing strangers, just you and your family in a peaceful, beautiful setting.

This is especially great for shy kiddos or sensory-sensitive children who do better without lots of noise and distractions. The quieter environment allows them to warm up more comfortably, making for more natural, relaxed photos. Also, overstimulated adults, I know you’re out there.

So… Is It Really Worth the Early Wake-Up?

Absolutely. A little bit of planning (and maybe some extra coffee) can make a huge difference in your family photography experience. A lot of my clients are from out of State and sometimes need a little guidance on photoshoot locations in the Central Florida area —Don’t worry friends, I’ve got you. Cypress Grove Park in Orlando.

First up is this wonderful location that I just know you’ll love, especially if you’re a big extended family coming in from out of town, staying in the Kissimmee or Orlando area. Cypress Grove Park is a huge ninety-acre park around a 1920's mansion & lake. Imagine towering oak trees draped in Spanish moss, a beautiful white mansion straight out of a Southern fairytale, with stunning lakeside views that make every photo look dreamy (Especially at sunset). This is my go-to location for large families, family reunions, and family vacations because of the abundance of space and diversity you can add to your collection. It’s also fun for the little ones with tons of space to run around and enjoy themselves. Cypress Grove Park is perfect for all types of photoshoots though — Maternity photos, Graduation photos for Orlando locals, Engagement photos, and even Weddings!

Let me introduce you to my absolute favorite photoshoot location in Central Florida which is also a HUGE favorite with my clients. Lake Runnymede Conservation Area. This fourty-three acre preserve is located along Lake Runnymede and neighbors East Lake Tohopekaliga in St. Cloud. And why is it my favorite location? Because it’s gorgeous at any time of day, that’s why! It seems like no matter what time of day I shoot here, the lighting is always stunning. It is especially gorgeous an hour before sunset— Think light filtering through the trees, giving off the perfect sun flare… just, chef’s kiss! If you like the long grass at sunset vibe, Lake Runnymede Conservation Area has a grassy area behind the trees that looks amazing on photos!

This location is perfect for any type of photoshoot —Family portraits, maternity photos, graduation shots, couple’s & engagement photos, elopements, you name it! I’ll let the images below speak for themselves.

Are you looking for something quiet and lowkey? Steffee Landing at Shingle Creek is just that. Located smack bang in the middle of Kissimmee, you’d think this place would be busy but it really isn’t. In fact, the atmosphere here is very laid back and it’s a great option for people living or visiting Kissimmee, FL and don’t want to drive too far. It’s close to Disney and the tourist area.

Mead Botanical Gardens

Welcome to another one of my favorites and one I wish more people would give a chance.
If you’re looking for a photoshoot location that feels like a wild adventure through nature’s most beautiful secret corners, Mead Botanical Garden is the place! It’s a sprawling 47 acres of lush greenery, blooming flowers, and winding pathways that make every turn a little magical. Whether we’re capturing sweet moments by the butterfly garden or taking epic shots under the shade of towering trees, this place has so much variety. We can even adventure over to the little creek where several of my clients have even taken their shoes off and gone for a splash before! Super cute for photos and gives you a chance to cool off in Summer. Located in Winter Park, it is about a 30-40 minute drive from the Disney area (Depending on traffic) but it is totally worth the drive in my opinion.

Saint Cloud Lakefront is a small beachy area that is a lovely option for those living in or visiting Central Florida who want to go for the for the beach vibe, but are too tired to drive all the way to the coast. Tip: Lakefront is located not even five minutes away from Lake Runnymede Conservation Area. To add some spice and variety to your collection, we can split our session between these two locations.

Every corner feels like a movie set, making your photos stand out with timeless, scenic beauty! If you’re staying in the Disney / Reunion area then you’re right around the corner.

From modern coffee shops and charming storefronts to leafy parks, beautiful streets, and the SunRail Station park, there are so many little pockets to explore. It has that relaxed downtown feel while still offering plenty of greenery and open space for more natural-looking photos.

It’s also a great option for families with little ones. You can get those cool, downtown-inspired portraits while still having a kid-friendly environment where everyone can move around and have fun. Whether you're after polished portraits, playful family moments, or a little bit of both, Downtown Winter Park makes it easy to capture a session with plenty of personality.

With historic buildings, wooden fences, wide-open grassy areas, and plenty of beautiful natural scenery, there’s so much variety packed into one location. It has that charming, nostalgic feel without looking overly staged, making it perfect for families who want their photos to feel relaxed, authentic, and a little bit different.

And if you have kids, this is a particularly fun location because there’s plenty for them to explore. You can move between the historic village and the surrounding natural areas, giving you a gallery full of different looks without having to drag everyone from location to location. It’s a great choice if you want a little old Florida charm mixed with natural beauty.

Your Home (Or rental)

If you’re from out of town and simply too tired or too overwhelmed to drive to a location, I’m totally down for an in-home, lifestyle-type photoshoot at your rental. In fact, I do that a lot, mainly for large families who are renting an Airbnb and have had a long few days at the theme parks and do not wish to drive more than they have to. It may not give off the same outdoorsy or urban vibe as some of the other locations but it’s something we can rock! No time limits, more flexibility on booking because we aren’t avoiding the sun. It's a fun and it’s an easy option. Easier for little ones, meaning, easier for the grown ones!
