How To Prepare For An Outdoor Photoshoot During Summer

Although the Summer holidays have come to an end, we are still very much in the middle of Summer here in Florida. As an natural light Photographer in Orlando, 90% of my photoshoots are done outside. One thing I have noticed while shooting this Summer is that a lot of my clients are totally over being photographed after about 20 minutes. I don’t blame them. This Summer has been BRUTAL and while other people are waiting for the weather to cool down in their States, we in Florida have no hope for Fall to arrive anytime soon. That’s why I constructed a simple guide on how to prepare for an outdoor photoshoot during Summer.

  1. Listen to you photographer’s advice

Okay, so what does this mean? Basically it means when a Photographer advises to pick a time during either early in the morning or evening, take that advice. We offer specific times based off of the chosen location. We take into consideration the lighting and how that will affect your images, but we also don’t want you to feel miserable during your session because it translates onto photos. We want you to love your photos and we want you to love how you look in your photos.

2. Wear light makeup

If the pores in your skin feel clogged and overheated, you’re going to start to feel more and more irritated especially if the sun is beaming down or the heat index is high. I advise to wear very minimal makeup during Summer sessions. Your photographer won’t mind airbrushing your skin for you if you want to achieve that flawless skin look. Personally as a Photographer, I’d rather put in the extra work behind the scenes that have a client feeling uncomfortable and unhappy.

3. Bring water and request a break

A lot of clients worry about time and keeping me longer than I need to. The truth is, I don’t mind shooting for longer and I don’t charge extra. Obviously I would charge if they kept me waaaaaay over my time, but I would prefer my client comfortable and happy. It’s totally okay to request a small water break if you’re struggling with the heat. You could also pack a small fan or ice pack to help keep yourself comfortable.

4. The trees are your friend

Typically in Summer I will only offer outdoor photoshoot locations that provide some form of shade. It’s way too hot out there right now. Florida summers are aggressive. Not only will a shaded location provide you will comfort but your skin won’t be washed out by harsh sunlight.

5. Wear breathable clothing

It’s possible to wear light, breathable clothing and still look cute. It’s especially possible for children and should definitely be taken into account when doing a family portrait session. Little kids typically don’t enjoy photoshoots as it is, so making sure they are comfortable during your session is very important.

6. Consider an up-do

I’m not trying to persuade you not to wear your hair down because the majority of women prefer to wear theirs down in photos, but take into consideration the humidity levels. Sometimes during Summer, an up-do is your friend, not your enemy.

7. Set boundaries with your Photographer

Us Photographers tend to want to keep shooting so we have as many options as possible. Even if your allotted time isn’t up, it’s okay to tell your photographer that you’re done and no longer want to shoot. If you feel like your photographer is asking too much of you, please tell us NO MORE! I promise we won’t be offended.

8. Embrace Summer

There’s no real way of avoiding the heat during an outdoor photoshoot in Florida so going into the shoot with a positive mindset, and an understanding that you are going to sweat is key! It’s temporary discomfort but you will be able to cherish your images forever!
