Why Blue and Khaki Is My Least Favorite Outfit Choice for Family Photos

If you’ve ever planned a family photoshoot, chances are you’ve seen the classic advice: just wear blue and khaki. It’s been the go to for years, especially for beach sessions and outdoor family photography. And while it’s safe… I’m going to be honest with you as a Kissimmee and Orlando family photographer. It’s also kind of boring.

I say that with love, because I know it feels like an easy win. But after photographing so many family photoshoots in Celebration, Disney area resorts, and all across Central Florida, I can tell you this combo rarely does you any favors on camera.

First, let’s talk about how it actually photographs. Khaki has a tendency to fall flat, especially in bright Florida light. It can look dull and washed out, and it doesn’t bring much richness or depth into your images. Pair that with standard blues like navy or light blue, and suddenly your photos start to feel a little… expected. Not timeless in a fresh way. More like a catalog from ten years ago.

And here’s the bigger thing. Blue and khaki just doesn’t say anything about you. Your family photos should feel personal and elevated, not like you copied the first idea that popped up when you searched what to wear for a family photoshoot. When everyone shows up in the same predictable palette, it can make your images blend in instead of stand out.

As a Central Florida family photographer, I’m usually shooting in soft, glowing light with natural backdrops around Kissimmee and Orlando. Those environments look incredible with warm neutrals, soft creams, earthy tones, muted greens, and even subtle prints or textures. These colors photograph beautifully and give your images that effortless, high end feel without trying too hard.

Blue and khaki can also pull attention in the wrong direction. Instead of focusing on your connection and the way your family interacts, your eye can get stuck on the contrast of the outfits. And trust me, the goal of a great family photography session is not to have your clothes be the most memorable part of the image.

If you’re planning a family photoshoot in Kissimmee, Orlando, or near the Disney area, I always recommend choosing outfits that feel a little more intentional and a lot more you. Coordinated, not matching. Soft, not stark. Elevated, not overdone.

At the end of the day, you deserve family photos that feel current, natural, and genuinely beautiful. And while blue and khaki isn’t the worst thing you could wear… it’s definitely not the vibe if you want your photos to stand out.

Don’t worry though, I’ve got you. I help all of my clients with styling so you never have to guess. No khaki required.
